Vodacom goes Zoopy

Vodacom invests in Zoopy

When we relaunched our new-look site in December last year, we set out to find an investment partner that could help us roll out our strategy and grow Zoopy into the future.

Well we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve been having it!

After months of very productive discussions behind the scenes, Vodacom (South Africa’s Leading Cellular Network) has secured a 40% stake in Zoopy, giving them a significant entry into the multimedia market.

We couldn’t have asked for a more committed, encouraging or inspiring partner. Their investment will give us the resources we need to be able to bring our users more exciting, useful and innovative additions to Zoopy features and functionality.

Some users have been asking if this means we’re now a part of Vodacom. Yes we are, but they’re also a part of us. We’re partnering to bring you an even more enjoyable online and mobile experience at Zoopy but beyond that, Zoopy still runs Zoopy. We’re not moving offices and we’re not being absorbed.

The bottom line is that by combining our mobile and online strengths, the future is brighter than ever for our community. New technologies, new frontiers and endless possibilities to do so much more.

Thank you for being a part of Zoopy. We’re so proud of all the milestones you’ve helped us reach. Watch this space as we continue to expand and improve into a whole new level of Your Social Media Playground.

Here’s the official press release:

Vodacom, South Africa’s Leading Cellular Network, today announced that it has secured a stake in Zoopy.com, a South African-based social media community website.

Launched in March 2007, Zoopy.com allows its users to upload and share videos, photos, podcasts and blogs. In just over a year, Zoopy.com have established themselves as a significant player in the user-generated content space in Africa, with Nokia selecting them as their regional imaging partner for South and West Africa. More recently, Zoopy.com was also chosen as Mail & Guardian’s Online video delivery partner.

This deal will give Vodacom a 40% stake in the South African startup and affirms its change in direction by entering the multimedia market.

According to Tlhabeli C Ralebitso, Managing Director, Vodacom Ventures, the investment is an important move at just the right time for both parties. “Zoopy.com has established itself as a key role-player in the online social media arena and has a growing community that will now be able to grow bigger, better and faster.

“Vodacom puts great value in what has been achieved online thus far, and we look forward to combining mobile and internet strengths to create an even more valuable destination for all Zoopy.com users.”

CEO of Zoopy.com, Jason Elk, is pleased at having found the “perfect partner”. “At the beginning of this year we realised that we needed investment to roll out our strategy to its full potential. But from the start we were quite specific about the partner we were looking for.

“Funding was important, of course, but we wanted our investor to add value to the overall Zoopy.com user experience too. With Vodacom at our side, we’ll be able to bring many new features and opportunities to both their users and ours. This is exactly what we were looking for and we can’t wait to make it happen.”

Zoopy Mobile app goes live (for even more handsets)

Regular Zoopy users will know that Nokia selected Zoopy as their regional imaging partner for South and West Africa in December last year. Since then, users have been able to upload and share their videos and photos on all Nokia Nseries handsets.

Today we’re adding to the mobile magic by launching the beta version of our Zoopy Mobile application. It won’t work on all phones just yet (if it doesn’t work on yours, please let us know) but now sits comfortably next to the Nseries app, allowing users to upload to Zoopy from even more handsets.

If you don’t remember your mobile password, it now appears on your Zoopy profile page after you’ve logged in.

New M&G Online partners with Zoopy for video delivery

Bizcommunity ran a story on some exciting Zoopy news. Here it is:

With the launch of the test version of the new Mail & Guardian Online late yesterday, Tuesday, 17 June 2008, it has been revealed that South African social media site Zoopy.com is the news site’s online video delivery partner. Launched in March 2007, in December that year Zoopy was selected as Nokia’s regional imaging partner for South and West Africa.

The test version of the new M&G Online site features a completely new interface, additional user functionality, streamlined access to the various areas of the site and video content embedded in selected articles, which is where Zoopy comes in.

Zoopy delivers video to Mail & Guardian Online

Matthew Buckland, M&G Online GM, made the decision to use Zoopy based on a list of crucial requirements that included reliability, scalability and quality of delivery. “Zoopy was an easy choice. They’re focused on the best technologies and are leaders in their game. We’ve worked with them successfully on previous video projects and we look forward to continuing our relationship with the growth of the new Mail & Guardian site,” comments Buckland.

Strong support of social communities

Zoopy CEO Jason Elk says they jumped at the opportunity to work with the M&G Online team again: “We’re excited to be a part of the changing face of such an important publication. The Mail & Guardian has been a strong supporter of social communities across its various sites and, with the addition of video hosted by Zoopy and provided by AFP, the new mg.co.za is living proof of the power of sharing.

“Our videos are processed using best of breed technologies, keeping sizes as small as possible while maintaining high quality visuals. We also host our files on various servers across the globe for optimised delivery speeds and uptime. These were important factors in giving M&G the video quality and experience it wanted for its readers.

“We wish the team all the best with the new site,” Elk adds.

While the M&G Online is only using Zoopy as a video delivery partner, as a social media destination, Zoopy allows users to upload and share videos, photos, podcasts and blogs. Also announced yesterday is the first release of the Zoopy WordPress widget which allows the sharing of Zoopy media with WordPress blog readers.

Zoopy hits 10 000 uploads

We’ve just processed our 10 000th media upload: a photo called Mirinda Orange by Arteeste.

It’s a milestone we’re really proud of. In the bigger picture, it’s an important stepping stone in our journey to bigger, better and bolder things. It represents a signifcant collection of media that means something to our members and is hopefully just as compelling to the new visitors who find our site on a daily basis.

Here’s to many more uploads and even more visitors to enjoy them!

Evita Bezuidenhout goes Zoopy

The former South African ambassador to the independent homeland of Bapetikosweti (and now the Diva of Darling) Evita Bezuidenhout opened her very own Zoopy profile today.

Known as the best babotie maker in South Africa, Tannie Evita is grandmother to three children from Billie-Jeanne (who married Leroy Makoeloeli). She has two sons, Izan and De Kock (who’s with the Gay Liberation movement), a loving husband (Oom Haasie) who’s writing his memoirs and one sister, Bambi Kellermann, who enjoys shocking the nation with her frank cabarets and confessions.

Evita’s profile page is home to videos, photos and blog posts that celebrate her Long Waltz to Post-Apartheid Freedom, as well as current and future media to keep her fans posted on what she’s up to out there. Pop in for a koppie tee to say hi - she’d love to meet you.

Research reveals massive 5 year growth in online video advertising

It’s no surprise really that another research report has indicated an increase in internet ad spend; it’s off a relatively small base. Online ad budgets have always remained a fraction of their TV, radio and print cousins, so there’s loads of catching up for internet advertising to do.

Though the report is US-based, the rest of the world has always followed suit, though often in slighly longer lengths of time. The good news is that the margin is going to start narrowing very quickly over the next five years, according to the IDC research report. They predict a jump in overall internet ad spend of 100%: from $25.5 billion in 2007 to $51.1 billion in 2012.

If this materialises, it will represent a massive shift. Not just in revenue numbers but in the general agency approach to the online portion of their media plans. In fact, IDC believes that if their predictions are correct, The Internet will go from the number 5 medium all the way to the number 2 medium in just 5 years, internet ad spend will be bigger than dollars spent on newspapers, cable TV and even public broadcast TV, coming in second only to direct marketing.

What is very interesting is that video marketing will play the lead role in converting agencies to the online way of life. IDC believes that video advertising will be the “principal disruptor of internet advertising over the next five years by attracting the most new marketing dollars”. From a grossly underestimated spend of $0.5 billion in 2007, their research suggests that online video ads will pull in $3.8 billion by 2012.

It’s only logical that as broadband gets faster and faster (and cheaper and cheaper in the case of markets like South Africa, where capping is still an issue) video on demand will play a dominant role in the average Joe’s entertainment menu. He’ll download full DVDs in the time it used to take him to drive to a video store and interact with HD video ads, websites and applications.

Online video advertising could in essence become the New TV, allowing agencies (if they’re clever) to still make a cool R2 million off full film production - just for a different, more portable set of screens; from iPods to mobiles to LCDs.
