SA’s online community is feeling the love

It’s 2007 and suddenly Mzansi is starting to feel WAY more connected. Not that we haven’t been before, but we’ve each been ultra-connected in our little islands, connecting to our own batches of friends, colleagues and aquaintances.

Now, blogs are screaming off our screens. And we actually know and interact (and drink/eat/be merry) with the people who write them, IN REAL LIFE. Suddenly there are dinners, awards, aggregators and local social bookmarking … and Zoopy, of course :)

I was saying to Scott today that it’s fantastic to be alive and online in South Africa in 2007. Egos and ownership are starting to come second and third to what the user wants. And it shouldn’t be too hard to figure that out, because at the end of the day we’re all users of each other’s services. And it’s great to see this kind of thinking start to click with so many people, in so many industries, in such a big way.

Just today, IOL leapfrogged stuck-in-the-mud thinking and embedded a Zoopy video in one of their stories.

Someone from Zoopy HQ was at the Solidarity in Action / Freedom of Expression protest outside the SABC in Sea Point yesterday and uploaded the footage to our news channel. IOL happened to cover the event and, for the benefit of their readers jumped at the opportunity to enhance the written article with some video footage of the event, which we were only too happy to share.

Have a look at just a small example of what South Africans can achieve online, when we put our heads and hearts together:

How can you not love being a part of all this?
Long live SA internet, long live :)

P.S. Even bloggers-by-the-sea are excited about the possibilities! *wave* Ethekwinigirl, thanks for noticing that IOL got Zoopy’d.

I want a synapse-writable internal brain drive

In between inventing electronic toilet roll holders and nail varnish for cats, I wish someone would come up with something really useful (to me):

I want a synapse-writable internal brain drive, that records everything taken in through my eyes and ears and allows exporting through a USB drive just behind my left ear (to hide the technology from anyone finding your endless gazes kinda suspicious). No more running out of battery power (Bar One in stomach, brain keeps going) or driving around Stellenbosch trying to find yet another 1gig memory stick. And most importantly, no more missing the perfect shot. At last, what you see is what you’ll actually get!

Many of us at Zoopy HQ have spent a lot of time out of the office this week, which is a good thing considering we’d started to forget what non-fluorescent light looks like. We’ve been spending loads of time at feedback sessions with users, testing out some pretty snazzy new functionality, and having a cool-by-the-pool time at some great SA events.

We had a blast at the annual Valley Pre-Primary Sandcastle Competition on Hout Bay beach yesterday (Human Right’s Day). It was amazing to see the sand that usually gets between my toes (and everywhere else) be put to good use. The winning castle was an igloo with accompanying eskimo in a canoe and lapdog. Check out glimpses of the day’s events: video and photos.

Ernie Els vs Grey Teacher vs De La Rey vs Durban spring tide vs Fidentia

In the 17 days that we’ve been in Live Beta, it’s been fascinating (addictive, even) to see how the wider viewing audience has responded to content posted by Zoopy users.

For obvious reasons, the Ernie Els ‘doos’ video has had a huge ‘ohmigosh’ factor. But the SA teacher flipping out continues to take the cake. De La Rey’s made hot water cooler conversation around the world in recent weeks and no one can get enough of J. Arthur W. Brown, the Fidentia boss who hit a speed wobble recently.

On the photo side of things, it’s Durban, Durban and more Durban. With the recent spring tide devastation, it’s no surprise that this photo, this one and this one quickly became the most popular photos uploaded. And just for good measure, the Sharks cheerleaders did their bit to lift everyone’s spirits!

What a week :) Have an awesome weekend and instead of sleeping til 1 on Sunday, drag yourself out of bed and show us what you’ve got. Then you can go back to bed, knowing that you have a chance of taking home a 30gig Video iPod. Sweet dreams!

The fun is shining

It’s Frrrrrrrrrriday :) And the end of our second working week in Live Beta. Feels (much) longer though!

Found a great Zoopy review that gave an extra bit of vooma to our whole team this morning.

South Africa Blog called our site “new, fun and fresh“, and said we “sound like a fun bunch of guys who have worked really hard to bring South Africa something special“.

YOU guys sound like you know us pretty well already - and we’ve only just met! Thanks for the kind words. We’re in love with the possibilities of making SA a smaller place. And if you think things are fun and fresh now, wait until Zoopy V2 arrives. More of everything, coming soon :)

Some of our members have written in to let us know of a few parties and events they’re going to be going to this weekend, so watch Zoopy on Saturday/Sunday to see what they got up to.

Wherever you are, have a good one! And remember if you have to misbehave, do it on camera … and share it on Zoopy :)

The true meaning of sharing

An interesting blog post was recently published at PROTOCOLINPRACTICE, raising the question of copyright and sharing. And giving Zoopy a nice little mention - our ‘fan base’ will be chuffed :)

Here’s a quote from my comments on the post:

Copyright is always going to be an ongoing concern of any social networking destination. In the end, the corporate conglomerates of the world will need to forge new partnerships and realise the value behind the true meaning of sharing. Watching a video clip of your favourite movie online doesn’t mean you aren’t going to go out and buy the DVD. The player size is small, the quality is far from DVD-standard and if anything, all that the video clip is going to achieve is prompt you to purchase even more!

That all said, respect must still be paid to copyright restrictions and laws. But in the end, is watching a DVD at home with 20 friends any better or worse than sharing a 5 minute clip with the same 20 friends online?

In the long run, unique user-generated content will always be the marathon winner. It’s more interesting, more believable, more entertaining and more relevant to the person who posts it - and the people he/she shares it with. The rest of the stuff is just material that will land up in the archives, reserved for bursts of interesting viewing.

What’s news

Browsing through the assortment of videos and photos uploaded by Zoopy members over the last week or so, two new videos have really stood out in terms of popularity. Not the type of popularity we all longed for at high school but popularity that comes with bad news, sad news and shocking news.

In the bad/sad department, a video uploaded by rickstar in the news channel this morning (Zimbabwe beatings on the news) brings home the reality of what’s happening in Zim. The unfortunate situation in the country has been all over the news - and now it’s here:

In the shocking department, rickstar posted another video that’s probably made teachers around South Africa cringe with empathy. SA teacher flips out has been viewed 319 times (so far) since being uploaded 4 days ago. If you haven’t seen it, here it is:

Where in the world

Where in the world is ZoopyOver and above the South African chats about Zoopy, the word is spreading … and the world is getting smaller! All going according to plan, Pinky ;)

Zoopy has been mentioned in a few international sites out there as well. Here are a few random ones from international locations, including a couple of non-English speaking destinations as well. Why non-English? Because it’s fun to see how deep and far-reaching the social phenomenon really goes. By the looks of things, cultural boundaries are evaporating like two Disprin in a teaspoon of water. It’s fantastic!

If you’ve got some free time on your hands, just go to http://babelfish.altavista.com to translate any of these sites into good old SA Engels :)

One of the most in-depth international reviews we’ve received has just come from Pulse 2.0, a Web 2.0 reviewing and profiling site ‘driven by a passion for technology and entrepreneurship’. We’re thrilled to have had them visit Zoopy and review us on their side of the Atlantic :) Thanks Amit, will reply to your review in the comments on your site!

Friday afternoon

What a week! Hard to believe that we burst into Live Beta just a few days ago.

Hard to believe that in this short amount of time, we’ve had tens of thousands of page views, loads of new members join up and all kinds of interesting videos and photos uploaded. Hard to believe how many emails we’ve received, worked through, replied to and laughed at. Hard to believe that even though we just launched LB on Monday, one of our users has even gone as far as saying “goodbye YouTube, hello Zoopy”. We’re smiling.

For all this and everything that came before it, we’re going for few deserved drinks somewhere nice with a view of the sea against that unbelievable mountain. It’s been an awesome, incredible, wonderful week. Thanks to the bloggers, users, supporters and constructive critics. If this is what just five days can produce, imagine what else is in store in the months and years ahead. Damn I love the people of this country!

Have a blast this weekend guys. And remember to take your phone/camera/vidcam with you wherever you’re going, whatever you’re doing, whoever you’re doing it with :)

P.S. Remember our official URL is zoopy.com, not zoopy.co.za. Even though both will get you to us, just bookmark zoopy.com when you’re there and go straight to where you need to be every time.

Click click, ding dong, spend spend

Thanks for all the terrific feedback guys. We’re happy to report that most of the bugs you’ve sent through have been squashed - and the one that remains is being worked on as we speak. Well, type ;)

Please keep the feedback rolling in - sleep is overrated anyway! Send your thoughts (with screenshots, if necessary) through to us at jason@zoopy.com. Remember that four lucky buggers will walk away with R250 Kalahari vouchers at the end of this month, just for sharing your thoughts and bugs. So keep writing!

In our latest meet and greet session, Zoopy was very kindly mentioned over at SA Rocks, run by Nic, with this article contributed by Justin Hartman. SA Rocks has a fab attitude about the country we call home, and we support them all the way. If you’re in a hurry and can’t read everything they had to say, here’s a quick highlight:

Zoopy is going to be a really valuable service. Not only do they have the video sharing capabilities but they have also integrated photo sharing, similar to Flickr.com, and for me this is their strongest quality. The integration between a YouTube and Flickr type website is a really positive move in the right direction.

Thanks Justin :) Some cool extra photo management coming and many more extras down the line. Watch this space for more features rolling out soon soon!

Tyler Reed’s also come out guns blazing in support of local social networking. He made some excellent comparisons between the international and local scenes - and he seems to back up our ring-fencing thoughts (that makes space for SA content and ‘content that interests South Africans’) that we shared yesterday. Nice job, Mr T :) Keep it real - and relevant!

We’re amped for Amplitude8!

Mike Stopforth and Dave Duarte just released the eighth edition of their podcast, Amplitude. If you haven’t caught it yet, start downloading now (15MB).

The guys gave some really decent airtime to Zoopy and the South African video sharing landscape in general. Dave was quite impressed with us “mashing up videos and photo sharing in one place”, where you can “put all your multimedia in one spot”. Great summary Dave! Much more in dev at the mo and some new features rolling out over the next few weeks, ranging from new ways to handle photos and videos through to profile improvements beyond the current Media Manager overview. And of course Zoopy V2 that’s 60% complete in our Top Secret lab in the middle of the Magaliesberg :)

Mike raised two interesting points during the cast that we’d like to respond to.

The first: Mike wondered what the business model behind Zoopy is. I’m more than happy to answer it here. In a word - partnerships. We’re still cementing some of these but we can say that in the near future, sponsor partners will be contributing to the community in new, exciting and interactive ways. Ways that traditional media could never allow. And with opportunities for users that would otherwise never be as involving or interesting. What we’re working towards though is a big-picture plan that extends across all kinds of social media, with a much broader community all plugging into the same mindset and neighbourhood, wherever they are. And because we’re local, we’re going to have real-world, local, virtual-to-tangible impact as part of the overall package.

The second: Mike played devil’s advocate and asked whether we (and by ‘we’ he meant general South African online peeps) actually need local destinations and services, as opposed to just using international behemoths like ‘da Tube’ and ‘da Space’. We happen to strongly believe that there’s space for ‘da Zoopy’. Dave said that his personal opinion was that there is definitely a space for South African-specific content. Mike said he was definitely on the same page.

We agree completely. But that said, there is a difference between ‘South African content’ and ‘content that interests South Africans’. Zoopy is home to both. So just because every video or photo on the homepage doesn’t necessarily feature boerewors and rugby doesn’t mean that we aren’t hosting content that is essentially ‘South African’. If a user living in Springs wants to see and share Britney shaving her head, it’s just as interesting to us and other Zoopy users as a regte egte episode of Swart Kat or Riaan Cruywagen reading the news :) And anyway, if we had to impose the ‘South African’ label on everything and paint ourselves into that corner, who would ever be able to tell if a video of a black labrador running on a beach or a bunch of friends dancing to some music was recorded in Blaauwberg or Beverly Hills? ;) 100% South African and 100% South African interest. We welcome both ends of the spectrum, and everything in between, at Zoopy.

Zoopy is home-grown and we’re flipping proud to be doing what we’re doing as South Africans. But we’re never going to tell our users what they can and can’t post (within the realms of decency of course). At the end of the day, if you’ve found Zoopy and love what our users are doing, go ahead and upload things that matter to you. That’s what user-generated content is all about. The true spirit of Web 2.0 is to create the framework and then get out of the way, to let the users take over. And that’s what we’re going to be working to give as big a platform as possible to over the next few months and years. All from our home in beautiful Cape Town of course - and that’s never going to change :)

Bottom line: we guide whatever we do with an easy golden rule, “just have fun”. And everything else follows from there.

Good night!
